Safeguarding Snapshot: Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
February 1, 2016
In the UK FGM is a criminal offence under the Female Genital Mutilation Act 2003. The Serious Crime Act amended this to create a new offence of failing to protect a girl from FGM, introduced FGM Protection Orders and introduced a mandatory reporting duty requiring regulated health, social care and teaching professionals to report known cases of FGM in under 18s. It is important that everyone is aware of how to recognise the signs, and what to do if you have a concern.
